I am interested in the programme because it would help me develop my drawing and illustration skills by coping with different challenges. I am also willing to develop my knowledge on using new softwares and taking a part into the world of animation.
For this piece I have used original pencil drawings, collage, monoprints, rubbings and collographs of various subjects. The theme is ‘’Cultural Journeys’’ based on the places/ museums that I have been to. This has been a collection of a journey of my work.
An example of this is a visit to Gallery of Costume, Platt Hall. I included illustrations of women wearing hats. There is also an image from the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry which is the continuous line drawing of mechanical parts. I also included images of famous people eg. Marilyn Monroe.
This artwork was also an entry for Whitworth Art Gallery's event for making a postcard design and it was chosen among other well designed postcards.
During my visit to London I took photographs of the streets there, of the pavement.
Later on I printed the scene on acetate and projected it on a canvas. The paintings were done with acrylic in size 80x30 cm.
I chose Black and White because city streets can often be cold, dark, damp, grey and depressing.
These shots were chosen instead of a famous building because it is a scene of everyday life and I wanted to capture the atmosphere of people rushing through the streets of London.
The main source of inspiration for this art work was a summer workshop with art school, when I had a great opportunity to paint outdoors. You are able to see there three butterflies hiding in grasses stems and leaves.
It is a Black and White line drawing done with black ink. I chose B & W because I wanted the lines and objects to stand out rather than the colour. I managed to do this by using lines, dots and different shapes. To illustrate the leaves and grass I decided to use various, repetitive patterns and shading to give them realistic, but at the same time, playful mood. For the frame I conjured up a feeling that the stems are trying to break out into the existence.

From the distance the focal point if the small, dark butterfly and the dark leaf in the centre. At a close range your eye is also drawn to the more detailed parts, such as the big butterfly and the stems it is hanging on.
This imagine is created by layers placed on top of each other. And as the background is done with less layers it appears in the distance with the insects in the front.
For this painting I was inspired from Pablo Picasso's painting called ''Guernica''' which was created to represent the bombing of Guernica, Basque Country on 26th of April 1937.
I was attempting to make my painting similar to the ''Guernica'' taking the mood it shows by using black and white colours in the background. The painting was done on a canvas, with acrylic. First I used a picture of a half empty metro and the rest of the background was painted with acrylic.
My message to the viewer was meant to show that nowadays we are trapped in public transport. There are all these chemicals which affect us badly. To show the impact of them I made them stand out by painting them in colour and zooming in.
This painting was done as an abstract practice for the painting brief.
The first part of the process was drawing the face free hand in pencil using a family photograph as a reference.
Later on background was painted in light yellow with acrylic and after that I worked on the face which was painted turquoise to create an unnatural impression.
To create a contrast between the portrait and the background I painted the shirt dark red. The warm colours I have used are red, yellow but mostly there are cold colours which are turquoise, blue, green, purple and grey. Some of these colours also refer to military uniforms.
The focal point In my view are the eyes. They were painted black with white eye lights to create a reflection
of the light source.
Image may create an atmosphere of loss from war because of the emotions that are readable in the eyes. They symbolise fear, sadness, knowledge and affection of real world.
For this painting I was inspired by Mark Anstee who talked in a lecture, describing his work. He produced a drawing of soldiers which he spent 72 days on. Later on he crossed all of them with an 'X' saying that it is hard to gain a personality but easy to lose it and die. Listening to his words reminded me of the Remembrance Day and the symbol of it is a poppy.
To start off with I painted the background beginning from the middle using lemon yellow tones. This was done using acrylic paint.
Continuing the background I used cold and dark colours such as blue, purple, green, later on also white. To build the background I used smudge technique with brushes and also a wet in wet method to blend the colours together.
I chose to paint poppies also because they are red and the colour represents the blood. This has now been taken forward by using poppies for the Remembrance Day.
The next part was done using line brush to symbolise the stems/ stalks of the flowers.
To show where the light source comes from I painted light/white highlights onto poppies.
The focal point wanders to the midpoint on yellow background because this is the lightest/ brightest area of the image.
Scale of the poppies in the painting meet the real life size.
This is a painting of a magnolia branch where I used silk and silk paint.
The idea was to paint a scarf with a summer theme. That is way I have chosen to use bright and warm colours such as ochre, cadmium yellow, crimson and viridian mixed with raw sienna.
This photograph of a grasshopper is taken on summer time in Latvia.
As I noticed the contrast between it and the flowers in my garden I thought that it would make a great concept! The warm colours in this picture I have captured are yellow, orange, red and the cold ones are dark green, purple.
The grasshopper's head and the back caught my attention the most as I look at the picture. This is because they are hit by the light source which is the sun coming in at the top right of the photograph.
The marigold's petals have created a texture with frills. This photograph has also been enlarged to enhance the details.
